How do you use underground wire locator?
How do you use underground wire locator?
Under most front yards, there is likely to be a copper wire of one kind or another buried there. Television cables, telephone lines, electrical cables and wires for irrigation systems are all buried in the ground. Other underground utilities include water, sewer and gas lines. Modern equipment should come with an underground copper wire for locating, but older (and incomplete) equipment may lack this marker wire.
This can be a big inconvenience when you want to dig any holes in your yard. If you don't know where the wires and other utilities are, you run the risk of cutting them out. Equally frustrating is that a broken wire buried in the ground can shut down the system connected to it.
The first step in repairing and removing these wires is finding them, which is easy with the right equipment.
1. Obtain a cable fault locator (also known as a cable fault tester)
Underground cable fault locator. These devices are available from electrical equipment suppliers; a wide variety of devices can be used, from basic units that beep when approaching wires to advanced units that can detect gaps and breaks in wires.
2. Find one end of the wire
If possible, find the bare end of the wire you are looking for. If you're looking for a TV or phone cord, you can grab the cord right into the house. The wires will go to the breaker panel and the irrigation wires will go to the irrigation control box.
3. Connect the transmitter unit
Connect the transmitter unit of the locator to the bare wire end according to the manual of the cable fault locator model. The transmitter sends a signal along the wire, which the receiver handle can then pick up, allowing you to trace the wire's path. Some locators will also tell you the depth of the wire.
4. Using the receiver unit
Turn on the receiver and carry it slowly over the area where the wires are located. It beeps or lights up to alert you when it finds a wire. Create a grid search pattern, especially in larger yards, to ensure the entire area is covered. Mark "Hits" for more accurate wire positioning.
5. Use an induction antenna
Please use a device with an inductive antenna that can be implanted underground. This will send the signal through the ground to the wire, which can then be picked up by the receiver. It eliminates the need to trace wire ends for patching in the transmitter. Inductive tracking may be less successful, especially for pipes under six feet. Reinforced concrete and well-insulated lines may result in undetectable targets.
6. Digging Line
After you find the wires, dig carefully. The locator may not pinpoint the depth or location of the wire, so there is a risk of cuts if the shovel is stepped too hard. When using large excavation equipment such as backhoe loaders or trenching equipment, digging a preliminary test hole by hand can prevent damage to the utility.
7. Check the current of the wires
Before touching the probe of the multimeter, press it onto any wire. Buried live wires may present a shock hazard.
Underground cable fault locator
If the line is shallow enough, you can use a metal detector to find underground wires. The effective depth of a metal detector depends on the manufacturer and model, soil type and conditions, and the size of the target. A hobby metal detector may be deeper than a foot, but using a metal detector for locating underground utilities is unlikely to be successful.
The following introduces a very useful professional cable tester tool:
At Shopify wholesale, the website is:BUY NOW
Detecting cables, electrical lines-water/gas supply pipelines buried in wall or earth
Detecting and Locating breaks and short circuit in cables and electrical lines buried in wall or underground.
Detecting the laid metal tap water pipe and metal heating pipe.
Detecting interruptions and short-circuits in floor heating.
Detecting fuses and assigning current circuits, tracing sockets and junction boxes having accidentally been covered by plastering.
The transmitter is integrated with the function of AC/DC voltmeter, which can measure 12 to 400V AC/DC voltage on a linear basis.
